Friday, September 24, 2010 at 0:24 Emma Stone gets A for stAr
Her name is Emma Stone and after watching the Easy A trailer I predict she's gonna be a star. So far this throaty redhead had played some supporting roles in films like Superbad, Zombieland or Ghost of Girlfriends Past, but Easy A looks like the perfect star-making vehicle for an up-and-coming actress like her.
It's not hard to see that Easy A takes Clueless as a model. While Clueless, probably the most popular highschool update of a literary classic, was loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma, Easy A seems to use Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter as a plot vehicle rather than as a direct inspiration.
Watching the trailer, however, I had to think of that extraordinary teen movie called Election. I don't think Easy A will be half as good as Election, which had a pitch perfect script by Alexander Payne and featured Reese Witherspoon's best performance to date, Oscar notwithstanding, but I have the feeling that it can make for Emma Stone what Juno did for Ellen Page. Moreover, the film features a terrific supporting cast, including my favs Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci.
