Balada Triste de Trompeta leads Goya nominations with 15 nods

Balada Triste de Trompeta leads the nominations for the Goya Awards, which were announced this morning by the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with 15 nods and will probably cruise to victory at a ceremony to be held in Madrid on Sunday, February 13, and which will mark the 25th anniversary of the Spanish Film Awards.

También la Lluvia, Spain's official entry to this year's Oscar race, has also received a Best Film nod among its 13 nominations. Alex de la Iglesia and Icíar Bollaín, helmers of these two films, are currently President and Vice President of the Spanish Film Academy. Joining them in the hunt for the big trophy appear two films not spoken in Spanish: Pa Negre, a Catalan-speaking post-Civil War drama and Rodrigo Cortés' Buried, which has garnered 10 nominations in virtually all categories it was eligible.

The four films reappear in the Best Director category. I'm pleased to see Cortés getting his due for his directing effort, especially after the snub in the New Director category some years ago for his excellent work in Contestant.

It is not the first time a foreign actor is nominated for a non-Spanish role. Nicole Kidman received a Best Actress nod for her great performance in The Others and last year Rachel Weisz emulated her in another Alejandro Amenábar film, Agora. Nevertheless, it strikes me as a surprise to see Ryan Reynolds joining Goya veterans Javier Bardem and Luis Tosar in the Leading Actor category, while Carlos Areces is being ignored for Balada.

Among the acting categories I am delighted to see Terele Pavez getting her fourth Supporting Actress nomination for Balada, another Alex de la Iglesia collaboration. After having been robbed of two nominations for El Día de la Bestia and La Celestina and losing to another acting legend, Julia Gutiérrez Caba, back in 2001, the Academy has another chance of recognising this most overdue performer.

In the below-the-line categories I'm also pleased to see the nomination of Eduard Grau in the Cinematography category for Buried. His camera work is, together with the overall direction, the most striking aspect of the film.
