Monday, January 31, 2011 at 20:08 Betty White pulls off a surprise win at the SAG
Four weeks ago, as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations were announced, I posted an entry in the blog titled The curious case of Betty White.
The immediate reason was White's surprise nomination in the Best TV Comedy Actress category for her role in Hot in Cleveland, but I also elaborated on her unique television career, which has spanned over seven decades.
Last night Betty White pulled off a phenomenal surprise by taking home the trophy over Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) and Jane Lynch (Glee). She had already been honored last year with a Life Achievement SAG Award, so her win for a competitive trophy was even harder to predict. Seeing her (seemingly genuine) reaction, not even her expected it to happen.
In my previous entry in the blog I've already expressed my dismay over the SAG's predictable results. Her victory was therefore especially refreshing and, at 89, she gave the funniest speech of the night.
The King's Speech might have taken top honors at the SAG, but Betty White was the indisputable queen.
