San Sebastian 2011 preview: 'Tyrannosaur', a film by Paddy Considine

I already said in a previous entry about this year's San Sebastian Film Festival that one of the most appealing sections in the fest is the Zabaltegi-Pearls, a conveniently named selection of gems from this year's major festivals crop.

One of the films included in the section is British actor Paddy Considine's feature directing debut Tyrannosaur, a film that earned awards for director Considine and stars Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan earlier in the year at the Sundance Film Festival.

I'll get back to the film during the festival as I just confirmed interviews with Considine and Olivia Colman. In the meantime, check out the trailer after the jump.

FIPRESCI names 'The Tree of Life' best film of the year

It's been three months now since I first wrote here about Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. I saw the film just a couple of hours after it had been awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. I thought then, and I still think now, that it was a wise decision, forThe Tree of Life is an extraordinary film in every sense, worthy of that or any other award recognition.

2011 Emmy preview: picks & predictions

I really like going out on a limb when it comes to predicting the Emmys . There are too many categories and the number of eligible shows and films is simply too large to make a legitimate attempt at completeness and accuracy. In that spirit, I knowingly dodge my responsibilities as meticulous blogger and I'll offer up here, not any realistic predictions, but a very whimsical (and unlikely) list of personal picks and preferences for the 63rd Emmy nominations, which will be announced tomorrow, July 14, at 5:35 AM.

2011 BAFTA Predictions

Two film award ceremonies in one night is too much even for me, but I have to do this. I have just posted the entry with my analysis and predictions for tonight's Goya Awards, but I cannot start preparations for the simultaneous broadcasting spree without offering my choices for tonight's Bafta Awards. After all, my personal highlight of this year's film award season will come when the name of the 2010 best supporting actress Bafta recipient is announced. If Lesley Manville is recognised for her extraordinary performance in Mike Leigh's Another Year I'll be the happiest man on earth. I'm aware that right now Helena Bonham Carter is the frontrunner for her role in The King's Speech, but I cannot lose my faith in a moment like this. Champagne is ready and I'll drink it either way, but victory tastes always so much sweeter...

Here are my predictions for the 2010 Bafta Awards.
