New York Stories: Beautiful Darling, Hanna and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold

I recently took a 10-day trip to New York City. A mixture of miscalculation and sheer lack of planification concurred to make me miss the Tribeca Film Festival, which had just come to an end when I arrived to NY. I therefore don't have any interviews or film festival commentary to offer this time, but maybe it's better that way.

Hanna trailer, a film by Joe Wright with Saoirse Ronan

Sometimes children are bad people too, says Cate Blanchett in the trailer of Hanna, the new film by Joe Wright to be released later in 2011. That Saoirse Ronan, who plays the title role here, can be a naughty girl is clear since her breakthrough performance in Atonement, where her lies were the pivotal plot element of the film and the origin of the misfortune and unhappiness of Keira Kneightley and James McAvoy.

Although Peter Weir never equalled the quality of his sophomore effort Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), his filmography, which includes films like The Years of Living Dangerously (1982), Witness (1985), Green Card (1990) or The Truman Show (1998), is interesting enough to pay attention to anything he does.

The Lovely Bones 

It is no wonder that director Peter Jackson was fascinated by the idea of adapting Alice Sebold's bestselling novel The Lovely Bones into film. First of all, it would allow him to revisit the subject of suburban murder, which he so brilliantly approached in 1994's Heavenly Creatures, while at the same time he could give free rein to his visual imagination by recreating the Middle-Earthesque heavenly fragments of the novel.
