The Beatrice Straight effect: Rooney Mara's and Blake Lively's Oscar chances

When Judi Dench gave her acceptance speech after winning the Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare in Love in 1999, she anticipated disapproving comments on account of the brevity of her part in the film by saying: 'I feel for eight minutes on the screen, I should only get a little bit of him'.

Pete Postlethwaite, 1946-2011

I last saw Pete Postlethwaite on screen a couple of months ago in Ben Affleck's terrific heist drama The Town. The film features, in my opinion, the best ensemble cast in a film released in 2010 and Postlethwaite's brief but compelling performance perfectly fits among the remarkable work of Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively, Chris Cooper, Jon Hamm or Rebecca Hall.

2011 OSCAR PREDICTIONS (II): Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively stand out in Ben Affleck's The Town

To have a solid directing career is not what one would expect from someone who, at the age of 25, wins an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Not, at least, if the Oscar is awarded for a tear-jerking, phoney story like the one Ben Affleck and best pal Matt Damon wrote for Good Will Hunting, one of the most painfully self-complacent films Hollywood gave us in the 90s.
